Sunday morning, news and more

Have you heard of frozen fog? Omaha has had frozen fog for the past few days, simply stated… it’s beautiful. The trees are covered in white crystals, when a bird lands on a tree branch the flakes fall like a mini snow fall.

I’m sad to report that I’m still waiting for the Omaha Library to release copies of Committed (Elizabeth Gilbert) which was released almost two weeks ago. During a visit to the library this weekend I was talking with a member of the staff who mentioned the delay might be related to the first of the year and waiting for the new budget. I might end up buying a copy which would be a disappointment but I need to read the book before participating in a book discussion later this month. I will give them a few more days before heading to the bookstore. I’m trying to use the library more this year but this wasn’t what I expected.

That’s how I Blog: While running errands this weekend I listened to That’s how I Blog. I learn so much about blogging while listening to this podcast, one tip I discovered this week is that I might want to look at my blog stats and click to the websites visitors come from. Just this morning I found a blog that I had never visited!

I have never read a book twice but was happily surprised to listen to this weeks guest mention reading books several times.  Have you ever reread a book? Do you have a favorite that you like to read over an over?

I am scheduled to be a guest on That’s how I Blog on March 16, if you want to read along with us we will be discussing Double Fault by Lionel Shriver. I selected this book solely based on author name. Did you read We need to talk about Kevin? If you did you will understand why I would like to read another title by this author, if you haven't read Kevin... I recommend it but know it is very dark. I hope I’m not setting myself up for disappointment by expecting too much, the bar is high.

This week: The Omaha Bookworm’s meet on Tuesday to discuss The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. The MMBC will be discussing April and Oliver with author Tess Callahan on Wednesday evening, and I’m setting up movie night with some friends on Thursday evening. Do you have any movie recommendations for us?

What I’m reading: I’m reading the March MMBC selection Why is my Mother getting a Tattoo and it’s a hoot! I keep reading parts of the book out loud to share familiar stories with my family. If you have a family (and we all do) you will get a laugh from this book.

Synopsis: Despite her forty years and a successful career as a rock journalist, Jancee Dunn still feels like a teenager, especially around her parents and sisters. Looking around, Dunn realizes that she’s not alone in this regression: Her friends, all with successful jobs, marriages, and families of their own, still feel like kids around their moms and dads, too. That gets Dunn to thinking: Do we ever really grow up?

Up until this year I never planned on re-reading a book. I felt too guilty because there are so many other books out there untouched. But then I reminisced about some old time favorites that I've missed. So I signed up for the Flashback challenge for this purpose!

I regularly re-read books. Emma, Old Man and the Sea, Leaves of Grass, etc. I like Nicholas Sparks and other contemporary writers too, and sometimes re-read them. I take notes on them, how they were written, learn new vocabulary, discuss them with friends and family. I'd like to read The Wednesday Sisters book again, Equal again, and others.

Frozen fog sounds beautiful. I've been all about the cold, wintery weather this year and just can't seem to get enough of the snow. I reread books myself especially those that I just can't get enough of. Enjoy your week!

I was able to participate in the first "That's How I Blog" but keep forgetting on Tuesday nights to tune in.

I also like to read the same book in different languages, to see the difference in the translations between them. It is raining here today. I'm listening to a Swedish author reading from a book now, and reading a different book by him to learn his philosophy from the perspective of being a professor at Upsala leading a life in a country with socialized medicine. Interesting, he tells what it is like having a heart attack and afterward. I never thought about it before -- the inner journey also required to recover.
